Support scams – the numbers

You may have experienced it before, a call from someone claiming to work for Microsoft, or perhaps an anti virus company offering you a free upgrade, or maybe free security checks.

Of course, this is a scam. If it happens to you it’s best to hang up. If you think it may be a genuine offer, ring the company directly and ask them first.

A recent survey of 7,000 people in the UK, US, Ireland and Canada by Microsoft found some staggering numbers.

  • 16% of people had received these types of calls. In Ireland it was even higher, with 26% of people having received a call.
  • Of the people who did receive a call, 1 out of 5 people fell for the scam.

That’s roughly 3% of the total surveyed.
